<image:title>Cars 2 Gallery - Survival Mode required skilled driving and taught the player the ins and outs of a track.</image:title>
<image:caption>Survival pitted the player against a diminishing shield that, when depleted would result in the player being destroyed by a laser beamed down from above. Therefore, the player was asked to follow specific lines along a track to collect batteries to power that shield. This mode was designed to: - Push on mastery of racing skills such as drifting. - Push on management of Turbo, and the best time to use it. - Teach the player about secret routes on any given track. - Create a sense of tension that makes the player feel pressure.</image:caption>

<image:title>IN 2.0 Gallery - Disney Infinity 2.0 brought the Marvel Universe to the franchise, and with it significant upgrades.</image:title>
<image:caption>The inception of Disney Infinity 2.0 presented me the opportunity of Lead Character Gameplay Designer, and at the same time, Disney Infinity 2.0 brought the Marvel Universe to the Disney Infinity franchise. In this new role, I set out to extend the value over time of every character by adding Skill Trees to each avatar, and in turn, giving the player the ability to make his/her IGP (figure) his/her own by offering meaningful choices over the 20 levels of progression.</image:caption>

<image:title>IN 2.0 Gallery - While melee and ranged combat were improved, Super Moves allowed us to really define a character.</image:title>
<image:caption>Additionally, I wanted the player to be able to fulfill the fantasy of playing as a Marvel Super Hero (or Villain). This was achieved by growing the combat mechanics for all avatars with the goal of staying accessible for younger players while offering some depth for parents and older players. A new mechanic, The Special Ability, was added to each character - These varied from one-off attacks to state changes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Jabberwocky - We wanted to deliver a companion you felt was real.</image:title>
<image:caption>Much of the design process involved an intimate understanding on the mechanics each enemy would push on, the gameplay loop with and without Jabby in play, and the gameplay loop when the main avatar had earned the "tools' necessary to defeat the enemy on his own. To do this, much thought was put into: - How we would make Jabby helpful, but not all-powerful, allowing the player to feel a sense of competence but also a sense of care for him. - How Jabby would handle any given monster, and what would be asked of the player at any given point in the loop with that monster. - How to bring Jabby in and out of play via narrative or gameplay means in order to sculpt an encounter or emotional beat.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Additionally, I worked with level artists on the sculpts of 2 mountains; Northstar and Valle Nevado. The majority of the low-level work I did was placing terrain and man-made objects on the mountains to give players lines with which to trick within. This consisted of ramps, boxes, rails, halfpipes, trees, snow drifts, rocks and other objects. In addition I authored camera angles that would be used if the player hit specific jumps. Finally, I assisted the systems designer in the layout and tuning of various challenges in the game.</image:caption>

This resulted in enemies that kept the player from spamming as much as they had in previous versions of Infinity, asking them to dodge, block, counter and perform launchers. This also allowed the designers to develop more tricks to defeating particular enemies.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In improving the combat in Disney Infinity 3.0 we focused on four major areas of improvement: - Expression between combat mechanics - Improved Kinesthetics - Enemy functionality - Ranged Combat Improvements</image:caption>

<image:title>IN 3.0 Gallery - Ahsoka's attacks hit enemies multiple times with her dual sabers while staying both "weighty" with her footwork and responsive with tuning.</image:title>
<image:caption>In regards to improved kinesthetics, animation and gameplay tuning philosophy changed a little to facilitate responsiveness and readability. Forward motion in an attack animation was prioritized along with footwork to sell weight. We developed a keener eye for time spent in animation after the button is pressed, and tuned splits timing to keep players feeling connected to their attacks.</image:caption>

<image:title>IN 3.0 Gallery - The Launch and Gun mechanic facilitates interplay between melee and ranged mechanics.</image:title>
<image:caption>To facilitate interplay between combat moves, we expanded our splits system (the system that allows the player to go from one attack into another) to allow smoother segues between mechanics; melee, ranged, force, special abilities, block, dodge, ground and air combos. Some examples of how we facilitated expression are: - By developing air combos along with the Launcher to give the player air play possibilities, rendering the enemy defenseless. - Pause Combos were implemented as a means of giving the player options for more powerful attacks on the melee attack button. - Force pull allowed the player to continue a combo string if performed at the right time. As the lead, I felt that these improvements (and many others) not only contributed to a more robust combat system that was true to the core experience, but also gave the player more ways to play within combat.</image:caption>

<image:title>Epic Mickey - Nintendo classic boss fights were studied in the design and ramping of our fights.</image:title>
<image:caption>I researched Nintendo's fights in Super Mario Galaxy as well as the Legend of Zelda series and used them as templates to mimic. Similarities are pretty obvious, but much was learned in doing so: - Putting bosses into phases allows clear ramping. In the case of Petetronic: - Phase 1 is simple and easy, teaching the basics of the loop required to push the fight forward. - Phase 2 ramps a behavior to add complexity for the player, but the goal remains the same. - Phase 3 is the most difficult, layering in another behavior for complexity, but maintains the gameplay goal of Phase 1. - Expect that the player can only pay attention to one thing at a time. Be sensitive to how much you're asking the player to understand at any one moment. - This gets to not only fight complexity, but also options available to the player.</image:caption>
